We will come home. .ونحن سوف يأتي المنزل
2017. Coroplast, aluminum braces, steel wire, spackle, sod
Here represented are the ruined homes of Syrian refugees of war, with plants growing out of the rubble. The piece expresses my fantastical wish that our indelible connection to nature will somehow cause us to transcend our own basic brutality. The conundrum is that this very brutality characterizes life in the natural world. And so I go on scrambling eggs and shouting at my kids and stepping on ants in my kitchen and listening to reports of the bombings. I pray that we will rise above, and that the refugees will come home.
